Oswegatchie Town Hall renovations almost done

HEUVELTON - A $70,000 renovation of Oswegatchie Town Hall is winding down with a renovated courtroom and new windows gracing the 51 State St. building.

The work will be done by the end of this week, according to Timothy C. Tuttle, the town’s code enforcement officer.

The $50,000 courtroom renovation has created a second, full-size court with public access and seating. That didn’t completely exist before, when the room was shared with the court clerk’s office.

“That was the problem,” Mr. Tuttle said, adding that state Office of Court Administration regulations require full seating in courtrooms.

The clerk’s office has been moved to the back of the building, where it is accessible to the court by stairs. Oswegatchie Town Court has two justices, William J. Rupp and Michael P. Hebert, who convene simultaneously on the same Monday night each month.

OCA is covering the cost of the court renovations, according to Court Clerk Karen Nicholson. Mr. Tuttle did the renovations himself.

The window replacement, the first since 1990, is a $50,000 project with 25 windows on the building’s first and second floors

The new windows are tinted, which will make a difference on hot, sunny days like Monday.

“We used to have to have the shades down in here,” Mr. Tuttle said.

The windows were installed by NCP Glass, Utica.
