CANTON - Massena wasted no time continuing an outstanding baseball season in downing Canton 17-1 in an NAC interdivisional baseball game at SUNY Canton on Monday.
Troy Myers stroked a singled and a three-run homerun and Zack Rusaw lined a single and belted a two-run shot to lead a 13-hit offense behind Dave Phillips complete game three-hitter as the Raiders upped their overall record to 16-1.
Phillips aided his own cause with three singles and Cullen Baines and Jake Kormanyos each added two singles.
Frank Palumbo continued his consistent hitting drilled a double and single for the Bears who finished their regular season at 4-15. Alden Slack tripled for the third hit for the Bears who will be seeded fourth in Class B for the Section 10 Tournament.
Massena, which capped an undefeated 8-0 Central Division season with a win over OFA this past Saturday, will square off against Franklin Academy in the Section 10 Class Championship Game on Tuesday, May 29, at 4:30 p.m. at Clarksons Jack Phillips Stadium.
In preparation for the title game, the Raiders are slated to play non-league games at Potsdam on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and at home against OFA on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Potsdam 3-4, OFA 1-5: After being held hitless by Brendan Arsenault for five innings the Stoners scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and secure the opening game win. Lee Buchanan singled, Ben Miller drew a walk, Trevor Keleher stroked a go-ahead RBI single and Shawn Clark plated an insurance run with a groundout.
Keleher also used a groundout to plate Potsdams first run in the fourth inning.
Miller also skillfully pitched a complete game where he limited the Devils to five hits, struck out five and walked only. He aided a solid defensive effort highligted by a diving catch by Clark at firstbase to end a bases-loaded threat.
Pat Cosmo stroked two singles for OFA, Kinnon LaRose doubled and Andrew LeBeau and Breton LaRose singled.
LeBeau also scored OFAs only run in the third inning a groundout by Breton LaRose. Arsenault struck out five in taking the loss.
Alex Farrell limited Potsdam to a single run until the Stoners broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs keyed by a towering two-run triple by Shawn Clark to rightfield. Farrell ended the threat with a strikeout and the game was rained out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Joe Cosmo lined a two-run double and Kinnon LaRose singled twice to lead six hits acquired against Potsdam pitcher Brandon Noble. Andrew LeBeau, Seth Pinkerton and Andrew Cole all singled for OFA and Brendan Arsenault supplied a sacrifice fly.
Andrew Ace doubled for Potsdam and Buchanan and Keleher stroked singles.
The Sandstoners, who finished at 3-5 in the division, enter the Section 10 Class B tournament at 8-7 overall as they look to begin defending their title starting later this week.
