SUNY Potsdam volleyball coach addresses SUNYAC Symposium

POTSDAM - SUNY Potsdam Head Volleyball Coach Steve Pike was one of several SUNYAC professional staff members to address students and job seekers at the sixth annual State University of New York Athletic Conference Symposium held at New Paltz from May 22-24.

SUNYAC students interested in pursuing careers in college athletics heard conference staff members present on topics ranging from coaching leadership to athletic communications. NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood was the event’s keynote speaker.

Pike, a veteran head coach of 11 seasons, spoke to attendees about recruiting student-athletes and enjoyed the experience.

“I was honored to be asked to present at the SUNYAC Symposium again,” said Pike. “It was a blessing to be able to work with future teachers of people and sport. I truly believe that is what ‘coaching’ is all about, people first and then the sport. Coaches have such an impact on your children and young adult lives that this is a great investment. Thanks to New Paltz and the SUNYAC for providing a great program.“

In 2011, Pike guided the Bears to a 19-17 record, a 13-victory improvement over the previous season. Potsdam was undefeated in three tournaments this year and captured the Oswego State Invitational. Sophomore setter Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was named to the All-SUNYAC first team, the Bears’ third straight all-conference selection. The Bears open their 2012 campaign against Union College at the Oneonta Tournament on Aug. 31.
