Malone’s Smith sets record in 200 at Section 10 Qualifying Meet

CANTON — Malone junior Harvey Smith qualified for today’s Section 10 200-meter dash championship in style Wednesday, breaking Brian Leonard’s record of 22.39 seconds with a time of 22.15 at St. Lawrence University.

Most of Wednesday’s events where qualifiers for today’s outdoor track and field championship meet, but there were also a handful of finals Wednesday. Smith was a medalist at the state meet last year in the 400, finishing in fourth.

“Hopefully he contacts me or something,” Smith said of Leonard, who is a running back with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals. “I’m hoping the times are faster this year, but I still have to run a good 400. I’m going to try that tomorrow. I’m hoping to go low 48 (seconds).”

Boys champions Wednesday included: Malone’s Corey LaMere (steeplechase), Aaron Sharlow (long jump) and Conor Gordon (1,600) and Clifton-Fine’s David Dobronsky (discus).

Girls champions included: Clifton-Fine’s Hunter Hitchman (steeplechase) and Lindsay Johnson (discus) and Canton’s Jen Lomaki (long jump) and Laura Pierce (1,500).
