CANTON Malone junior Harvey Smith qualified for todays Section 10 200-meter dash championship in style Wednesday, breaking Brian Leonards record of 22.39 seconds with a time of 22.15 at St. Lawrence University.
Most of Wednesdays events where qualifiers for todays outdoor track and field championship meet, but there were also a handful of finals Wednesday. Smith was a medalist at the state meet last year in the 400, finishing in fourth.
Hopefully he contacts me or something, Smith said of Leonard, who is a running back with the NFLs Cincinnati Bengals. Im hoping the times are faster this year, but I still have to run a good 400. Im going to try that tomorrow. Im hoping to go low 48 (seconds).
Boys champions Wednesday included: Malones Corey LaMere (steeplechase), Aaron Sharlow (long jump) and Conor Gordon (1,600) and Clifton-Fines David Dobronsky (discus).
Girls champions included: Clifton-Fines Hunter Hitchman (steeplechase) and Lindsay Johnson (discus) and Cantons Jen Lomaki (long jump) and Laura Pierce (1,500).
