MADRID - Madrid-Waddington Baseball Coach Justin Richards vividly remembers the last time a Yellowjacket squad played for the Section 10 Class D Baseball Championship.
It came in 2001 and he was a member of the team that suffered a 4-2 loss to a Parishville-Hopkinton squad which went on to win Section 10s first Class D State Championship.
On Wednesday, Richards guided M-W back into the sectional title game in a 5-1 victory over Heuvelton to face a familiar opponent in Parishville-Hopkinton. P-H created an All-NAC East final in stunning fashion by upsetting top-seeded and previously undefeated Morristown 5-2.
We beat Parishville-Hopkinton twice in the regular season 7-6 and 7-1 but that means nothing. They scored huge a win today and they will be very tough and we will have to play at our best, said Richards looking forward to todays championship game at Clarkson Universitys Jack Phillips Stadium.
M-W 5, Heuvelton 1: The second seeded Jackets (13-3) used an opportunistic offense to score in four different innings in support of a five-strikeout complete game by Greg Thompson who scattered nine hits. Austin Scott lined an RBI double, James Hunt went 2-2 with an RBI and Zach Brock and Harrison VanBuren both singled home runs.
Jake Mayette also singled for the Jackets who exploited eight Heuvelton walks.
Cody Holland went 3-3 for Heuvelton and drove in the lone run for the Bulldogs (15-4). Jack Palmer and Mike Guardino singled twice and Chris Powers, who struck out five in four innings, added a single.
P-H 5 - Morristown 2: Morristowns day started on a ringing note offensively as DaKota Marshall led off the bottom of the first inning with a homerun over the centerfield fence. But the Rockets would manage only one other run as P-H pitcher Zach Newton and reliever Mike Burns both escaped bases loaded threats early in the game and went on to hurl a three-hitter.
Burns struck out 10 after coming on with two outs in the third inning. Geoff Baldwin struck out 12 in five innings for Morristown which was victimizedby three two-out errors which led to three P-H runs in the fifth inning. Bobby Simmons struck out three in two in nings of relief.
Tyler Gallagher tripled for P-H which recevied a double from Burns and a seventh inning homerun by Phil Huckins. Parker Measheaw and Devin Tebo also singled for P-H (10-4).
