City Lions Club raising funds for Boys & Girls Club floor

The Ogdensburg Lions Club is currently conducting a fundraiser that will benefit the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club’s effort to put a new floor in the gym at the Club.

Lions President Barbara Ames-Montroy said that the Lions Club board of directors will turn over all funds generated after winners receive their prize.

This fundraiser is an opportunity for everyone in the greater Ogdensburg community to be a stockholder and help to pay for the new gym floor. Executive Director Thomas P. Luckie Jr. said the new floor is expected to cost between $40,000 to $50,000.

Tickets can be purchased for $1 from any member of the Ogdensburg Lions Club, at the Boys and Girls Club, Kimro’s Medicine Place, several banks in the Ogdensburg area and the advertising department at the Journal and Advance News office.

The Ogdensburg Boys Club was founded in Ogdensburg in 1964 after two years of planning.

The city of Ogdensburg, which had taken ownership of the Ogdensburg Telephone Company offices, turned the building over to the Founders’ Committee of the Boys Club so the club could open.

The present building at 610 Paterson St. was built after a public appeal.

The original committee that first raised the issue of a Boys Club for Ogdensburg consisted of such community citizens as the late J. Russell Phillips. Frank A. Augsbury Jr., Richard E. Winter, Frederick Shurtleff, and a number of others who joined this core group to make up The Boys Club Founders’ Committee.

The Boys Club of America changed its charter in the 1980s to allow girls to join. The Ogdensburg club was later renamed the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club and led by Retired Executive Director Thomas P. Luckie Sr., who began holding programs for girls.
