Jefferson Community College just received an authentic space shuttle tile, and it is on permanent display for the community at the Samuel Guthrie building.
The tile was sent to the college through the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations Space Shuttle Tiles for Teachers Program and can withstand more than 3,000-degree temperatures.
Shuttles were covered with more than 21,000 lightweight thermal protection tiles to protect their outer extremities during launch and re-entry to the Earths atmosphere.
Guests can view the tile on display from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside room 2-100.
