DEKALB JUNCTION — Family Dollar is planning one of its stores for Route 11 in the hamlet.

“They just thought it would be a good location because there’s nothing between Gouverneur and Canton,” DeKalb Supervisor Larry D. Denesha said. “It’s wonderful news.”

The 8,000-square-foot store will be built by Lawrence Construction, Canandaigua, at 4269 Route 11, next to the former Loopy’s restaurant and store. The St. Lawrence County Planning Board will review the application at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 226 of the county Courthouse.

The Planning Office staff has no major problems with the proposal, Deputy Director Jason C. Pfotenhauer said.

Mr. Pfotenhauer said the store likely expects to draw customers from neighboring population centers such as the villages of Hermon and Richville as well as from DeKalb.

A spokesman for Family Dollar did not return a call, but Mr. Denesha said the developer told Planning Board Chairman Louis H. “Harvey” LaBarge that the location was right for one of the company’s smaller stores. The property falls within the hamlet’s sewer and water district.

Mr. Denesha said he hoped both the county and town Planning Board would act quickly so the Town Council could review the proposal by its meeting June 20. The store, which sells grocery items, clothing, health and beauty aids and other general merchandise, could be open by fall.

Mr. Denesha said the store could be a beginning for making the town more attractive to other businesses.

“I think it’s going to spur additional traffic,” he said. “We’re very excited.”

He was not sure how much the project would add to the tax base.

“It’ll depend on the construction cost,” he said.
