LOUISVILLE - Officials from the town, fire department and Northern New York Volunteer Firemens Association all agree that this past weekends firefighters convention was a success.
I think for a first time convention host they did a bang-up job, association President Duane St. Louis said.
Mr. St. Louis said he was especially pleased with the attendance at the group annual meeting, memorial service and other events throughout the week.
Andy Fregoe did a great job, Mr. St. Louis said, referring to convention chair Andy S. Fregoe. He held a great crowd all three days.
According to Mr. St. Louis, the annual meeting was attended by 100 to 120 firefighters, with another 150 to 200 in attendance at the memorial service.
We had a very good turnout, Mr. St. Louis said. Im proud of the job they did, and I hope we can have another convention in Louisville.
Mr. Fregoe said he was also pleasantly surprised by the attendance at many of the weekends events.
The memorial service was impressive, he said, noting the New Testament Church of Massena proved to be a very good host.
You could play a football game in there, he said. Ive been to other services where there were people standing up in the back with more people waiting outside.
Mr. Fregoe said the towns facilities, which also included the fire hall and arena, were the topic of much discussion.
Everyone kept talking about our facilities, he said, adding that wasnt something he had put a lot of thought into leading up to the event.
Mr. Fregoe also said the support from the community helped make the event the success it was.
The town, recreation department and highway department all did a great job, he said, also naming Curran Energy Renewables, A. Cappione, Inc. Frenchies Ford, Frenchies Chevy and Hurlbut Tent Rental as other contributors to the event.
While the attendance at Thursdays and Fridays events may have exceeded expectations, Mr. Fregoe said the crowd on Saturday really showed other members of the association what Louisville has to offer.
Looking out at the crowd on Saturday was a truly impressive sight, he said.
Like Mr. St. Louis, Town Supervisor Larry R. Legault said he would like to see the town host another convention.
I think it was a huge success. There was a very good crowd and the weather was great. I dont think we could have asked for anything better, he said. I think we proved we could host a convention. I would like to see the department pursue another convention down the road.
And while Mr. Fregoe gave credit to the town, Mr. Legault was quick to credit the convention chair for his work over the past several months.
I think a lot of the credit should go to Andy Fregoe, who chaired the convention, and the other members of the department. They did a great job.
When asked is he was nervous heading into the event, which Louisville was hosting for the first time, Mr. Fregoe said no.
I knew things would work, he said.
