Ruth I. O’Shaughnessy, 85 of Massena, NY and longtime resident of Gouverneur, NY; died Saturday evening (June 9, 2012 ) at Fletcher Allen Hospital, Burlington, Vermont of complications following a stroke. Mrs.O’Shaughnessy enjoyed a long and fulfilling career of 30 years with St.Lawrence County, Department of Social Services, Adoption Unit. She worked joyfully and tirelessly uniting children and families in adoptions and in foster care. Ruth Weber was born September 24, 1926 in Bronx, NY. She was the daughter of Paul and Gertrude (Sheehan) Weber, on September 1, 1944, she entered the US Cadet Nurse Corps, and in August 1947 graduated from the School of Nursing, New Rochelle Hospital, New Rochelle, NY, where she worked following graduation. Ruth Married James D. O’Shaughnessy on April 16,1949 at St. Helen’s Church, Bronx, NYC. During their 43 year residence in Gouverneur, Ruth and her husband, James D. O’Shaughnessy were active members of the community, including numerous appearances in plays and musicals presented by the Gouverneur Community Players. Together they were active members of St. James Catholic Church. Mrs. O’Shaughnessy loving legacy includes her husband of 64 years, James; her sister, Maureen Danielson; her four children and their spouses: Steven and Chantal O’Shaughnessy of Massena, NY, Kevin and Pattye O’Shaughnessy of Sevierville, TN, Patti O’Shaughnessy and Tom Caton of Bronxville, NY; and Brian and Kim O’Shaughnessy of Potomac, MD; her grandchildren: Meagan McMahon, and Kate(deceased) and Colleen O’Shaughnessy; Molly and Lauren O’Shaughnessy; Isabel Caton; and Clara, Emily, and Michael O’Shaughnessy; and her greatgrandchildren: Caitlin and Andrew McMahon; and Aidan Corner. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Kate’s Team, at the Terry Fox Run NYC (www.terryfoxrunnyc.org), supporting research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Calling hours will be at the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St. Massena, NY, on Wednesday (June 13, 2012) from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.The funeral mass with be on Thursday at the Church of the Sacred Heart, in Massena, at 12:00 pm on (June 14,2012).
