PSB inmate accused of assaulting four guards

An inmate at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building faces allegations that he injured four corrections officers at the jail Wednesday morning.

Demearle R. Gulledge, 35, of 644 Huntington St., faces four counts of second-degree assault in connection with the 9:15 a.m. incident that sent all four officers to Samaritan Medical Center.

Jefferson County sheriff’s detectives said Mr. Gulledge attacked the officers as they were leaving his cell. Police said he was angry at officers for removing an ornamental shell from his dreadlocks after he had ignored officers’ orders to do so himself.

Detectives said one officer was bitten on the back of his neck and on his ear. The officer was treated at Samaritan and released, as were the other three officers, who suffered cuts and bruises.

Mr. Gulledge was arraigned in City Court and returned to the PSB on $15,000 bail. He was in the jail after being charged Tuesday with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony. He is accused of slashing tires on a vehicle parked at a residence on Route 3 in the town of Pamelia.

Two tires were slashed on a car owned by Anthony H. Gibson, 31, in the driveway at 24949 Route 3 at 9:45 a.m. June 1, according to court documents. Mr. Gibson and a woman in the house saw a blue van pull up to the driveway, and then the woman saw a man whom she immediately identified stabbing one of the tires, according to the documents.
