LISBON –Lisbon Central School will add another faculty member to manage its increase in enrollment. Lisbon Central School is set to welcome 60 students in its kindergarten class in the fall. That is double the schools average class size which typically ranges from 30 to 35 students.
Its a great thing for our school and our community, board member Tammy I. Amo said Wednesday. And the board is prepared to welcome more students.
Board members said they can only speculate at this point what is causing the trend which has been steadily growing for five years.
Were very proud of our elementary wing, said Mr. Gendebien. Were proud of our elementary wing. We have many parents who travel 30 minutes so their child can attend school here at Lisbon.
The board is expected to advertise for a new kindergarten teacher this month.
It is important that we keep the class sizes around 18 to 20 students, when you get to 22 or 24 it gets to be too much for the students and teachers, said Mr. Gendebien.
Mr. Gendebien said he did not foresee the board hiring any additional faculty for the high school or middle school.
My biggest worry is if the trend ends, said Mr. Gendebien. We dont know if enrollment is going to stay up. You hate to hire a teacher and then after cut back. Thats disappointing for everybody.
