Sandy Creek junior pitcher Chelsea Claflin was named to the Class C all-state softball first team Sunday, highlighting 12 area players chosen by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Claflin, the 2012 Times All-North Most Valuable Player for the Frontier League, went 16-2 with 169 strikeouts and a 0.58 earned-run average. She hit for a .500 average and drove in 30 runs, leading the Comets to their first state tournament appearance since 2007. She was named to the all-state fourth team last season.
Claflins teammate, Karintha Myslivecek, and St. Lawrences Lindsay Thayer were each named to the fourth team in Class C. Allie Barton of Thousand Islands was chosen for the Class C fifth team.
In Class B, General Brown teammates Abby Monroe and Katie Pitkin were chosen for the fourth team, as was Altmar-Parish-Williamstowns Tori Stanton. South Jefferson sophomore Jackie Decker and Ogdensburg Free Academy senior MaKenzi Stevenson were fifth-team selections.
Alexandria senior Jordan Bush landed on the second team in Class D, while Brianna Beaulieu of Colton-Pierrepont and Hannah Thornhill from Heuvelton were named to the fifth team.
