Eagles club planning new building at Northland Plaza

Members of the Watertown No. 782 Fraternal Order of the Eagles hope to break ground early next month on a new 6,500-square-foot clubhouse at Northland Plaza off eastern Boulevard.

Club secretary Richard L. Cooper said Tuesday the club is making the move from its present location at 19260 Route 11 in the town of Watertown to make room for new development for Washington Summit medical complex, owned by the Lundy Group.

The developer is purchasing the nearly acre site at the plaza behind the Kinney Drugs store for the Eagles and will swap the deed for the Route 11 property, he said.

“He’s going to build us a brand new clubhouse from scratch,” Mr. Cooper said. “It’s a good deal all around for us.”

A dollar amount for the project and other details of the new building were not available Tuesday.

Michael E. Lundy, Washington Summit Associates partner, could not be reached for comment.

Lundy officials looked at five different new locations before this one was selected, Mr. Cooper said.

“We wanted to be in the city,” he said, adding that the Eagles club hopes to increase its membership by having the new clubhouse within city limits.

At one time, the club had about 700 members shortly after moving to the Route 11 spot 29 years ago but now has about half of that number, he said.

The national Grand Aerie must approve the project before it moves forward. If all goes well, the new clubhouse will be open in December.

On Tuesday, the Jefferson County Planning Board reviewed site plans and referred them back to the city’s Planning Board for approval. Senior Planner Michael J. Bourcy expressed concerns about parking, since the site plans showed only 10 spaces when 33 are required.

“Traffic in that mall is haphazard,” agreed board member David W. Prosser.

But Mr. Cooper said the organization is working out a deal to share parking with the plaza.

Planners also recommended that the lighting scheme be better spelled out on the plans. A 960-square-foot pavilion and a patio off the building are included in the plans, Mr. Bourcy said.
