Renovations coming to dangerous intersection

POTSDAM — One dangerous Potsdam intersection will be renovated this summer in an effort to cut down on the number of accidents.

Morley-Potsdam Road is met by Morgan Road, Waite Road and Flat Rock Road at one unusually broad intersection.

“It was an intersection that kept getting wider and wider,” said Potsdam Highway Superintendent John A. Keleher.

Motorists driving down Waite Road or Morgan Road can cut across two streets at once, leading to dangerous situations. The intersection has a history of accidents, Keleher said, with the most recent crash occurring on June 21.

Town officials have known for more than 15 years that the intersection needs to be renovated, Mr. Keleher said, but it was only after receiving a grant from the state Department of Transportation that planning began.

The Town Council approved the project during a meeting on June 12.

The intersection sees a fairly low amount of traffic, with 1200 cars passing over it in one day in 2010, the last time it was measured.

“That’s not a lot of volume, so when you have several accidents in several years it really stands out,” said St. Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Toby W. Bogart. The county Department of Highways was asked to help plan the renovations.

Workers are currently waiting for feedback on the plan in a 30-day public comment period that ends July 10. No comments on the plan have been received so far. Once the comment period is over, construction will begin immediately.

The renovations will take three weeks or less, Mr. Keleher said.

Morgan road will be narrowed to realign the intersection with the rest of the road.

Waite Road will be moved slightly to create a T-shaped intersection at Morgan Road, rather than emptying into one wide intersection shared by all four streets.

A stop sign currently at the intersection of Waite Road and Morgan Road will be moved to the intersection of Morgan Road and Morley-Potsdam Road.

These changes will force drivers to come to a stop before turning onto Morley-Potsdam Road rather than cutting through multiple intersections.
