POTSDAM Village Police Officer Charles M. Daniels has been promoted to sergeant, filling a vacancy that has been open for three months.
The village board approved the promotion 4-0 during a special meeting Friday. Trustee Ruth F. Garner was absent.
Mr. Daniels will fill the vacancy created when Kevin A. Bates was promoted from sergeant to chief of police in March. The search for a replacement began June 18, when the village board requested a list of eligible candidates from within the department.
Three officers were deemed eligible for the promotion and interviewed for the position.
It was a difficult decision, Chief Bates said. They were all good candidates.
Experience was the deciding factor, Mr. Bates said. Mr. Daniels has been part of the Police Department for almost 10 years.
Mr. Danielss promotion takes effect today. His salary is $59,072 a year.
