PLATTSBURGH - The Norfolk American Legion Post 925 Rovers dropped an Independence Day twinbill on the road to the Clinton County Mariners.
Playing at Lefty Wilson Field, the Rovers fell 10-7 in the first of the two seven-inning games before going on to suffer a 14-2 setback in the nightcap.
In the first game, Cody Smith went the first two innings in taking the loss as the Rovers pulled to within one at 7-6 after falling behind 7-1 early only to have the Mariners put the game out of reach with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brandon Noble had three strikeouts and three walks in four innings of relieft.
Smith played a lead role offensive with two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth inning. Lee Buchanan singled and doubled as well while Troy Kovach singled and came around to score a pair of runs. Jordan LaShomb singled, scored a run and drove in another. Noble contributed a single and run scored while James Hunt, Rory Corcoran and Jimmy Miller all came around to score solo runs.
In the nightcap, LaShomb was tagged with the loss while stroking a double and scoring a solo run. Noble singled and scored a run. David Phillips singled and drove in a run while Tyler Haas connected for the other hit.
The Rovers return to action this weekend by traveling to Malone for a three-day tournament. They open on Friday against Malone at 4 p.m. On Saturday, they face Ogdensburg at 11:15 a.m., Adams Glass of Plattsburgh at 1:45 p.m. and Brockville at 6 p.m. before closing things out on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. against the South Shore Rockies.
