A town of Lyme man has been indicted on 23 counts alleging he led police on a high-speed pursuit after breaking into a convenience store in January.

Zachary L. Piche, 21, Three Mile Point Road, Chaumont, is charged with second- and third-degree burglary, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth- and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, second- and third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, second-degree reckless endangerment, petit larceny and numerous vehicle and traffic violations.

The charges were contained in a grand jury indictment handed up Thursday in Jefferson County Court.

It is alleged that on Jan. 3 he possessed a 12-gauge shotgun as he broke into the Nice N Easy, 12345 Route 12E, Chaumont, from which he stole money and cigarettes. It further is alleged that he used the shotgun, which was reported stolen from Henricus Wagenaar, 29188 Old Town Springs Road, town of Lyme, to shoot at and damage the store’s door and windows.

According to the indictment, he then fled the scene at speeds of about 100 mph on Route 12F in the town of Watertown and of about 120 mph on Interstate 81 in Watertown. Upon reaching West Church Street in the village of Adams, it is claimed, he caused risk of serious injury to sheriff’s Sgt. Todd L. O’Brien by intentionally crashing his vehicle into the sergeant’s patrol car, which sustained more than $1,500 in damage.
