Rovers outlast host Malone in tournament opener

MALONE - The Norfolk American Legion Post 925 Rovers opened a busy weekend tournament in Malone by outscoring the host team 5-1 on Friday.

Tyler Haas went the distance for the win, striking out eight, walking five and scattering five hits over the course of six innings. Brandon Dufrane took the loss. He posted seven strikeouts while walking two and surrending seven hits.

Haas also provided an offensive boost, connecting for a decisive two-run triple in the first inning. He later singled to finish with two hits along with Cody Smith, who also drove in a run and scored another. Jordan LaShomb and Dakota Vallance both delived RBI-singles to key a three-run outsburst in the bottom of the fourth inning that pushed the lead to 5-0. Jimmy Miller singled to accounted for the other Rover hit while LaShomb and Valance came around to score solo runs along with James Hunt.

Chad Rottier had three of the five Malone hits while Jordan Yando scored the only run in the top of the fifth inning.

The Rovers return to action today with the first of three games at 11:15 a.m. against the Ogdensburg Maples. They take on Adams Glass of Plattsburgh at 1:45 p.m. and then Brockville at 6 p.m. The Maples and Plattsburgh games are slated to be played at the Franklin Academy varsity diamond and the Brockville match-up at the Airport Field.
