The Ogdensburg Parks and Recreation Department is introducing a youth division this year for its second annual Sandbar Classic Fishing Derby on July 22 as part of the 52nd annual Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival. The event is co-sponsored by Algonquin Power, Inc. and Cape Air.
The youth division, for ages 16 and under, will be for bass and perch. Registration for youth is $5. Prizes and awards will be provided by the family of the late Al OMarah who will also be sponsoring the annual Al OMarah Lunker Award for the angler of any age catching the heaviest bass.
Top prize for the youth bass division is a Cabelas ultra-light spinning rod while the top prize for the perch division is a Quantum MicroXT spinning rod, both donated by the OMarah family.
Adult anglers can register for the following species – bass, walleye, northern pike and perch Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during normal business hours at the Dobisky Visitors Center. Cost is $5 per species but anglers have to register for at least two species. All entrants will be able to receive either a free T-shirt or hat, courtesy of Algonquin Power.
Each angler can only submit one fish from each of the categories they register for. Each fish entered will be weighed and its length recorded. Winners will be determined by weight. If a tie, the length will determine the winner.
All fishing is restricted to the St. Lawrence River. All weighing of fish will take place at Hosmers Marina.
Registration can be made the morning of the tournament at Hosmers Marina from 6 to 7 a.m. when fishing begins. The tournament will end at 3 p.m. when the winners will be announced and the trophies, provided by Cape Air, and prizes will be awarded.
