Beauty Bar to offer haircuts, drinks under one roof

How do you find enough time to enjoy happy hour with a glass of wine while getting your hair cut? Simple: Kill two birds with one stone by getting a discount on the haircut while drinking a glass of bubbly.

That’s what clients can expect at the Beauty Bar at 102 Washington St., a chic salon hatched by a pair of young entrepreneurs that will showcase a “color bar” where clients can get their hair done while ordering coffee, wine or beer.

“We wanted to bring something different to downtown Watertown,” said 22-year-old Moriah R. Littlefield, who spawned the plan with business partner Leah M. Jones, 20. “A lot of young people get their hair done before they go out during the weekend, so we wanted to bring that atmosphere here. Bars are very big in Watertown.”

The Beauty Bar, which opened last Monday, will begin to serve alcohol when it acquires a liquor license, they say, which they hope to accomplish this summer.

While the Beauty Bar is located at the former Arcade Barber & Beauty Shop — a fixture in the city that closed in the spring — the renovated shop has taken a 180-degree spin from its history by appealing to a younger generation. By design, its 12-foot bar, leather couch, maroon walls and spotlights lend the salon a contemporary vibe that mimics a bar. The managers’ friends volunteered their services over the past two months to renovate the salon, which is lined with new black stations.

Haircuts start at $12 at the shop, and its extensive menu includes an array of “conditioning cocktails,” happy hour discounts from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and a “Girls’ Night Out” deal with the whole shebang: a haircut with coloring, waxing and foils.

The two hairdressers worked together at MasterCuts in the Salmon Run Mall before taking a leap of faith as entrepreneurs. They came up with the “Beauty Bar” theme while casually brainstorming together at lunch one day, Ms. Jones said.

“The idea just came to us one day,” she said, adding they think its location by the Paddock Arcade and Watertown YMCA will be a boon. “We think the name will attract girls here who are like us.”

And the duo doesn’t want to leave out the guys. Plans are in motion to set up a space in the back of the shop with a large couch, television and video games.

“That way the guys can have a beer and watch March Madness while girls are getting their hair done,” Ms. Jones said. “This isn’t a salon just for girls. We chose the name ‘Beauty Bar’ because it’s gender-neutral.”

Hours at the Beauty Bar are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
