MORRISTOWN - The Town of Morristown, faced with a problem typical of code enforcement everywhere, has devised an ingenious scheme thanks to Fire and Building Codes Inspector, Kay Davis.

As summer gets underway and building projects are initiated, Ms. Davis is in the process of uploading more than 25 commonly used designs for additions, sheds, decks, barns and houses that are all reviewed according to New York state law.

“I don’t see anyone else with it,” she said of other municipality websites she has looked at. Ms. Davis hopes the designs, which she obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture and Louisiana State University before reviewing herself, will save people time and effort while completing projects around the house.

“When you get a permit you need to bring in plans with your application,” Ms. Davis said. Because drawing up plans can be difficult and confusing for those not versed in New York state law, this initiative is aimed at giving builders a leg up.

“Saving time is one thing, but really it’s about saving headaches for the consumer,” said Ms. Davis.

Morristown Town Supervisor, Frank Putman, said he believes the project is a “very positive thing.” The plan was unanimously approved on Wednesday at the Town of Morristown board meeting.

Ms. Davis hopes to have the designs available on the Morristown website by July 20.
