MADRID - The golden years will be celebrated here tomorrow.

On Friday, St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens and Office for the Aging will hold their annual senior citizens picnic at the Madrid Community Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The picnic will include bingo, outdoor games, music, food and door prizes. A public transit bus will be on display so attendees can become aware of its services. An official from St. Lawrence NYSARC will provide information on routes and changes with the bus service.

The picnic lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs will be served beginning at noon.

But most of all, according to Office for the Aging Director Nancy A. Robert, there will be a continuation of a tradition enjoyed by all.

“The St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens and St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging have partnered together for this annual event for over 30 years,” Mrs. Robert said. “The picnic lunch is provided through the Office for the Aging Nutrition Program. The county Council of Senior Citizens provides musical entertainment.”

Through the years, the picnic’s park and indoor venues have changed.

“For many years, the picnic was held at the Parishville park. The last few years the picnic has been held in Norfolk at the Dominic W. Zappia Community Center,” Mrs. Robert said. “This is the first year the picnic is being held in Madrid.”

Mrs. Robert said the average attendance at the picnics is between 250 and 300 people.

The lunch will be prepared by the Marine Corps League, Detachment 408, Madrid. A local vendor will be selling ice cream treats.

The Oshier Brothers Band will provide musical entertainment from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

All are welcome to bring lawn chairs to relax and listen to the music.

The suggested lunch donations are: individuals age 60 and over, $3; and under 60 is $5.

All senior citizens are invited. For more information, call the Office for the Aging at 386-4730.
