EDWARDS A Gouverneur man on an outing with his family on Trout Lake died of an apparent drowning Saturday while trying to rescue a distressed swimmer.
State police identified the man as Michael J. Lawler, 55, of Gleason Street, who went to help a swimmer in trouble and then went under water.
Neighbors from a nearby camp pulled Mr. Lawler, who owns a summer recreation camp, from the water before state police and firefighters arrived, said Hermon Fire Chief Christopher R. Stransky. Mr. Lawlers wife and family were present when the accident happened at about noon.
The neighbors used CPR to resuscitate him, the fire chief said. Mr. Lawler was taken to E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur, where he was pronounced dead.
State police are still investigating what happened. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Edwards fire and rescue and Hermon fire and rescue personnel also responded.
