VALLEYFIELD, Que. - In just her second season of hydroplane racing, Ogdensburgs Leanna Richards has achieved a feat that some racers spend their whole careers chasing at high speeds.
Over the weekend, the third generation Ogdensburg racer, won two 1.5 Litre finals at the Valleyfield, Quebec Regatta which is acknowledged as the Indy 500 of boat racing.
Richards, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Richards, pilotted Lil Crush to the checkered flag to the championship final Sunday after leading the field in Fridays final. She also placed first in a Sunday qualifier.
The Valleyfield Regatta enjoyed three full days of racing in the 1.5 Litre, 2.5 Litre, 350 Hydro and Grand Prix classes.
Scoring 98 points over the three days, Richards pulled within 15 points (276-261) of season points leader Michael Tremblay.
Bert Henderson of Brockville, Ont. drove Steeler to the showcase Grand Prix Championship on Sunday and Ogdensburgs Joe Sovie placed sixth driving Bad Influence after taking third in two qualifying heats. Henderson used a dominant showing at Valleyfield to move into the season points lead and Sovie stands 12th in the point standings after his third regatta of the season.
Sovie also scored 75 points by winning a Friday qualifying heat in 350 Hydro Valleyfield and stands fifth in the classs points standing with 75 points.
Kent Henderson of Brockville took over the season point lead in the 2.5 Litre Hydro after placing third in the Sunday final at Valleyfield.
Ogdensburg native Tom Vielhauer, who now resides in Syracuse, scored 41 points over the weekend in 2.5 Litre and stands 13th in the season standings.
Don Leduc drove Cannonball to first place in Sundays 2.5 Litre final and Norm Ensby drove OCR Gaz Barr to the checked flag in Sundays 350 Hydro Final.
