CANTON— After “unidentified fumes” were reported wafting from its basement, the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services building was evacuated at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The odor caused minor symptoms among some of the employees, though none required medical assistance. The building is located at 6 Judson St. in Canton.

Flammability tests conducted by the Canton fire department came back negative, though Atlantic Testing reported “small traces of a volatile substance” in the basement lunch room and the vent in the roof.
