WADDINGTON – Village trustees are hoping to add a new boat launch by next year.
The village currently has three boat docks located in Whittaker Park on the St. Lawrence River, but Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said the new ramp will be for non-motorized boats, such as kayaks and canoes.
Located across from Green Street on River Road, the access point currently exists as a crude dirt road surrounded by vegetation. The land has sat unused since it was returned as part of the 2003 relicensing settlement with the New York Power Authority following the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, according to Mrs. Otto-Cassada.
Weve discussed at some regard for a few years now, Mrs. Otto-Cassada said Monday. We thought this would be a great way to make use of the land. We hope to have it operational by next year.
Ms. Otto Casada said the village is also considering adding a bathhouse and other recreational facilities.
We have docks at Whittaker to bring in more boaters, according to Mrs. Otto-Cassada. This is ramp will be for easier access for smaller boats, as the shoreline there is much closer to the bottom of the river.
The project will be funded by the village.
We have to fund the project because the land was returned to us, Mrs. Otto-Cassada said. Right now estimates will need to be gathered for gravel, sand and some tree removal before we can move further.
