MADRID— A South Carolina woman was arrested by state police at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for allegedly possessing a controlled substance, then pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Melissa R. Givens, 31, of Summerville, S.C., was originally charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Ms. Givens was being interviewed as part of an investigation into a burglary at 332 Planty Road in Madrid when officers found Ativan pills, an anti-anxiety drug, without a prescription that Ms. Givens admitted were hers.

She was arraigned in Madrid Town Court and pleaded guilty to a reduced disorderly conduct charge. She was fined $50, as well as $125 in court surcharges.
