MASSENA - The 90 golfers due to compete at the 76th annual Northern New York Six-Man Team Championship can expect ideal conditions at the Massena Country Club this Friday and Saturday.

“The course is in phenomenal shape. I’ve been playing golf here for a long time now. I still play six or seven times a week and I’ve never seen the course in better shape,” said Max Pelifian, who is serving as captain of the Massena six-man team. “We’re expecting to see a lot of great golf this weekend.”

Led by individual medalist Tyler Woodward, Ives Hill Country Club of Watertown used a record-setting performance at the Watertown Golf Club to reclaim the team championship last summer. Also expected to be competing this weekend are teams from the Potsdam Town and Country Club, the St. Lawrence University Golf Course in Canton, the Malone Country Club, the Tupper Lake Country Club, the Gouverneur Country Club, the Watertown Golf Club and the Carlowden Country Club.

This year marks the first time in 10 years that the tournament is being held at the Massena Country Club and the host team is looking to end a 10-year drought.

“The last time it was here was the last time we won it,” noted Pelifian, who is the second man in the Massena lineup behind reigning club champion Justin Tyo.

The rest of the six-man team from Massena includes Tom Post, Matt Supernault, Anthony Viskovich and Lenny Garrow. Don LaBaff is the Senior Division representative and Omer St. Louis is the Super Senior Division rep.

“We’ve got a real nice team,” said Pelifian. “We have three golfers who played in college - Justin Tyo at St. John Fisher, Matt Supernault at SUNY Potsdam and Anthony Viskovich at LeMoyne.”

“And,” he added, “it’s always nice to be playing on our home course.”

Competitors will be going out in threesomes starting at 9 a.m. both days. Saturday tee times will be determined based on the final opening round standings with the leaders expected to go off the first tee at around 10:30 a.m.
