The New York Civil Liberties Union announced Tuesday that it is joining 34 of the national organizations other state affiliates requesting records about how license plate information is collected to determine whether residents travels are being improperly tracked.
The union said the state Division of Criminal Justice needs to release historical records to move forward with the study.
In 2011, the Department of State issued guidelines regarding how devices should be used to capture license plate numbers, geographic data and photos for vehicles. But the state said local authorities can dictate how information is used and stored.
