World Breastfeeding Week events held today throughout the north country

LOWVILLE — Medical providers and community agencies that have encouraged and supported breast-feeding will be honored today in Lewis County as part of World Breastfeeding Week.

From 10 a.m. to noon during the Lewis County Breastfeeding Support Group at the former Bateman Hotel, State Street, Dr. Shereen E. Palmer, pediatrician; Dr. M. Lynn Pisaniello, obstetrician-gynecologist, and Dr. Mary Lou Feilmeier, pediatrician, will receive recognition for educating and encouraging mothers about breast-feeding.

“Breast-feeding has been proven over time to be the ultimate feeding choice for babies,” said Angel M. Carter, WIC nutritionist for Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties.

“There are health benefits, not to mention the bonding. Our main goal is to support women, to help them make the best choices. We’re trying to make breast-feeding the norm, not an exception.”

Also being honored at the event are Hand in Hand and Kaboodles early childhood centers.

Mrs. Carter said anyone is welcome to attend today’s event and it is not just for regular support group participants. The theme of World Breastfeeding Week focuses on those who have breast-fed in the past or those who are breast-feeding.

Other World Breastfeeding Week celebrations will occur throughout the north country today.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Country Children’s Clinic, 238 Arsenal St., Watertown, there will be a support walk, small farmers market, agency displays and exhibits by other agencies.

In St. Lawrence County, there will be a support walk at 10 a.m. that will start at the New Hope Church parking lot at Grant and Cherry streets, Potsdam.

A support walk also will begin at 12:15 p.m. at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone, Franklin County.
