CANTON Thanks to a $32,000 loan and an $8,000 grant, Morley Volunteer Fire Company firefighters will receive new protective uniforms and updated storage space for their vehicles.
The money, awarded Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, came through a Community Facilities Program, which targets improvements in community resources as well as environmental projects.
USDA Rural Development State Director Bryan Clerkin said the responsibilities of rural community fire fighters extend beyond extinguishing blazes to other emergency situations.
The Morley Volunteer Fire Department, whose officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday, operates two engines, two tankers, a brush unit and a heavy rescue unit out of 7220 County Route 27 in Canton.
