A 58-year-old Watertown man was punched repeatedly in the head late Monday on High Street by three men in their unsuccessful attempt to steal the victim’s cash, according to city police.

Three suspects were arrested 15 minutes after the mugging and are charged with attempted second-degree robbery and attempted third-degree assault. Detained by police to await their City Court arraignments are:

n Marquis M. Dawkins, 23, of 611 Bronson St.

n Nathaniel Gary III, 21, of 168 High St., Apt. 1.

n Christen B. Smith, 17, of 627 Burlington St.

Police identified the victim as Walter Wilcox, 58, of 513 Olive St., Apt. 2. He was forced to the ground during the attack and suffered bumps and bruises, but he did not require treatment, police said.

Police patrols responded to an 11:50 p.m. report of a fight in progress, and the suspects were found walking at Factory and Mechanic streets, police said. They were out of breath and sweating, an officer observed. Mr. Wilcox was taken to the intersection where the three were being held, and he identified them as his attackers, police said.

The two older suspects have police records.

Mr. Dawkins, who in January was sentenced to three years’ probation for third-degree assault, has since then been arrested in the city. He was charged with disorderly conduct in connection with a fight in January; third-degree assault in March; disorderly conduct in May; and felony criminal mischief in June for allegedly causing damage in a residence.

Mr. Gary was sentenced in November 2010 in Jefferson County Court to a one-year conditional discharge and community service for criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child.
