Carleton W. Furgison


HAMMOND — Carleton W. Furgison, 84 of River Road died Friday, August 10, 2012 at his home.

Born November 8, 1927 in Theresa, NY, he was the son of Ralph and Ida M. Fulkerson Furgison and attended Brier Hill High School.

He married Lucille Youngs on April 25, 1952 at the Redwood United Methodist Church.

Mr. Furgison served in the United States Army from January 11, 1946 until his honorable discharge on July 5, 1947.

Upon his discharge he was a farmer with the Shimel Farm in Theresa. Later he purchased his own farm in Hammond, and in addition worked construction on the St. Lawrence Seaway for five years, was a caretaker at Mary’s Island State Park for ten years, a private contractor for the United States Postal Service for ten years and was assessor for the town of Hammond for several years.

He enjoyed woodworking and working with motors and engines.

Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Lucille, three sons and their wives, David and Sherry and Ronald and Carol, all of Hammond and Edward and Barbara, Idaho Falls, ID; two daughters and a son-in-law, Youndase Mead, Corning and Ione and Ed Hunter, Redwood; five sisters and three sons-in-law, Mary and Homer Lanphear, Evans Mills, Sally and Irwin Hamilton, Theresa, Roslyn and Lawrence Proven, LaFargeville, Joyce Storr, East Williamson and Betty Ward, Cheyenne, Wyoming; a brother, Paul Furgison, Alexandria Bay; thirteen grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rena Furgison, Watertown.

Two brothers, Wesley and George, a sister, Rosalee Ryder and a sister-in-law, Madelyn Furgison died before him.

The funeral will be 12 pm Thursday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa. Burial will be at Chippewa Street Cemetery, Briar Hill.

Calling hours are 10 to 12 pm at the funeral home prior to the funeral.
