Old electronics earns cash for Canton

CANTON — The town’s new electronics drop-off program is attracting dozens of customers and some extra cash for town coffers.

Since the program started in April, roughly eight tons of unwanted electronic equipment have been dropped off at the town barn on Stiles Avenue, said town Highway Superintendent Terry L. Billings.

The drop-off is free for all St. Lawrence County residents, who are allowed to bring computers, televisions, cell phones, printers and other electronics.

“It started off brisk and it’s remained steady,” Mr. Billings said. “We’ve had people here from as far away as Star Lake.”

The town receives 3 cents for every pound collected by Regional Computer Recycling & Recovery, Victor, a company that recycles electronic parts.

The company’s first Canton pickup collected 5,106 pounds of recyclable electronics and generated a $153.18 check received July 7 for the town’s general fund balance.

Mr. Billings said two more similar-sized pickups have been made since and the town is awaiting that revenue.

Computers and televisions are the main items being dropped off.

“A lot of people tell us they’re so pleased to have a place to get rid of these things,” Mr. Billings said. “Technology has run rampant as far as advances being made. A lot of this stuff is obsolete.”

Drop-offs are accepted from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday and Thursday, and by appointment by calling 386-8707.

Information also is available from Town Clerk Lisa A. Hammond, 386-3735.
