Ogdensburg Salvation Army will distribute school supplies to children

OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Salvation Army has been collecting school supplies for the past year to give to needy children.

Those who signed up for the program may begin picking up supplies Thursday at the 401 Franklin St. office.

Capt. Angela S. Shaffer said she expects to give out more than 100 packages of supplies to youths.

“We only have 70 kids signed up this year,” she said, “but we will probably double that after Thursday.”

Each package of supplies includes the basic essentials for school: pens, pencils, crayons, glue, erasers, paper and binders. Children in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade also will receive a backpack.

All of the supplies have been donated by community members and local businesses.

Because of that, the Salvation Army is still accepting donations at its offices and at the Ogdensburg branches of Kinney Drugs, Walgreens, Rite Aid, North Country Savings Bank and Price Chopper until mid-September. Donations after that will be kept for next year’s program.
