Police: Evans Mills man ditched car after speeding at 120 mph

An Evans Mills man tried telling state troopers Sunday that his BMW, which gave a 120-mph radar reading on Interstate 81 early Sunday morning, had been stolen at Alexandria Bay.

Michael T. Henry, 22, of 26092 Mountain Lane, made up the story to avoid arrest, state police allege. He was arrested Sunday night on charges of third-degree fleeing from police in a vehicle, making a false written statement and speeding. He is ordered to appear in town of Pamelia Court.

Police said there were actually two vehicles which at about 2:50 a.m. were speeding together, possibly in excess of 120 mph, and after they took the Route 342 exit, the BMW headed toward Route 12, police said. At the Route 12 intersection, the vehicle went into a ditch, police said. The motorist attempted to drive the vehicle, but the engine quit on him, police said.

Police allege that Mr. Henry obtained a ride from the accident scene, and subsequently made the theft report. A witness identified him as the driver, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
