SEWARD, Alaska - An Ogdensburg native is missing and presumed dead after he vanished during an extreme race on Mount Marathon.
Michael LeMaitre, 65, was last seen July 4 near the top of the 3,000-foot mountain, according to reports in the Anchorage Daily News. Searchers combed the mountain until mid-July, when Mr. LeMaitres family called off the search.
No trace of him has been found, Seward Fire Chief David Squires said Monday. He said although the official search was called off, volunteers continue to look for Mr. LeMaitre.
There are people going out on the mountain just about every day, he said.
Mr. LeMaitre lived in Anchorage and is a 1965 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy. A cousin, Mildred B. Dillenbeck, Ogdensburg, said he was well known and well liked.
Its bad enough when you lose someone, but when somebody just comes up missing you always have that wonder about what happened, she said.
