MASSENA — Mrs. Josephine Sardegna, 86, of 9 Laurel Avenue, passed away Friday afternoon, August 24, 2012, at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been admitted earlier that day.

Josephine was born on March 19, 1926, in New York City, the daughter of the late Anthony and Louise DeLaville Salgado. She attended New York City Schools. On June 22, 1942 she married James Sardegna at the Holy Agony Church in New York City with Father Bagena, officiating. James predeceased her on May 3, 2000.

Josephine first worked at A and P Grocery in Yonkers, New York as a meat wrapper. After leaving A and P Grocery she went to work for Heli-Coil as a machinist in Danbury, Connecticut, before moving to Massena in 1978. She became a sales clerk at Fashion Bug in Harte Haven Plaza, Massena and then at Bon Ton Department Store at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall, Massena until her retirement in 2000. She enjoyed reading, needle craft, and volunteer work at the hospital. She enjoyed her prayer groups and attending the Massena Baptist Church. Josie previously attended the First Baptist Church.

Josephine is survived by a son, John Sardegna, and his longtime companion Carole Queor; a daughter in law, Dale Mottola of Massena. ; and a daughter, Susan Farley of Florida; three grandchildren, Leona Ashley of Massena, Tracy Sardegna of Massena, and C.J. Sardegna of Massena; four great grandchildren, Brandon , Jonathon, Samantha, and Rebecca Ashley; one sister; four brothers; six nephews; eight nieces, all in Houduras, C.A..

Calling hours will be held on Monday at the Massena Baptist Church starting at 1:00 PM until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 PM with Rev. Clifford Boice, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery #2, Massena.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Massena Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
