HEUVELTON - The village celebrated it’s 100th anniversary and the end of summer this weekend during the village’s 15th annual Labor Day festival at the Municipal Boat Launch.

The festivities began with a walk/run on Saturday morning, with over 100 participants.

The theme of the event was “Happy Birthday Heuvelton” to celebrate the village’s founding in 1912.

“It’s a great family time, that’s what we wanted to do,” said Gail G. Kerr, co-chair of the Labor Day festival committee.

Later in the morning, about 30 of Heuvelton’s youngest residents were entered in a contest to become “Little Miss and Mr. Heuvelton.”

“We came to watch the baby contest,” said Kristie E. Simmons, who has made the celebration an annual tradition for her family.

Older kids could ride ponies or take to the water for a kid’s fishing derby, or try their luck at games like a ring toss and a milk bottle toss.

“The games have been very busy all day long,” Ms. Kerr said.

Adults could check out the craft show, where local vendors showed off their hand-made goods, or watch the St. Lawrence Paddlers Canoe Race.

The day ended with a donation auction at 5:30 p.m.

A group of nearly 50 volunteers worked to make the centennial festival bigger and better than previous Labor Day events.

“That’s a big thing, but if you don’t have the volunteers you don’t have it,” said Kristie E. Simmons, co-chair of the Labor Day festival committee.

The centennial celebrations continue tomorrow with a parade at 1 p.m., a fireworks show at 8:30 p.m., and music throughout the day.
