Massena police officer injured during foot pursuit

ASSAULT - MASSENA - A Massena village police officer was injured overnight during a foot pursuit on the banks of the Grasse River near the Massena fire station.

Village police said they responded to a complaint of a large fight near the Hotel Nadeau on Andrews Street ear;y Saturday morning and when they arrived they found an apparent victim lying on the pavement.

During their investigation at the scene, officers attempted to take Dustin E. Oakes, 22, of 105 Drumm St., Fort Covington, after he apparently continued to shout obscenities and attempt to fight with others at the scene.

Police said when Ptl. Michael Flynn was attempting to handcuff Oakes the Hogansburg man bolted from the scene and ran a few hundred yards to the Grasse River. Ptl. Flynn followed Oakes and as he was running down the riverbank, flipped and lasnded on his shoulder, suffering an injury that required him to be treated at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Oakes reportedly swam across the river before being taken into custody.

He was charged with a felony count of second-degree assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in connection with the 2:50 a.m. incident.

He was being held in the village lock up Saturday morning awaiting arraignment.
