MASSENA - Dustin E. Oakes, 22, 1065 Drumm St., Hogansburg, was arrested by village police at 2:50 a.m. Saturday and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault.
Mr. Oakes was allegedly intoxicated and became verbally abusiveto police officers outside the Hotel Nadeaus bar in Massena at 2:22 a.m. when police were trying to interview him about a fight. He reportedly was swearing and shouting obscenities at other patrons at Nadeaus and did not stop when asked.
As he was being placed under arrest, he fled while Ptl. Michael Flynn was attempting to handcuff him. A foot pursuit took place for several hundred yards across Andrews Street and down to the bank of the Grasse River near the Massena fire station, where he jumped into the river. Ptl. Flynn slipped on a ledge on the river bank, fell down the river bank and sprained his shoulder and injured his elbow. He was treated and released at Massena Memorial Hospital.
Village police, who were assisted by U.S. Border Patrol agents and Massena-based state police troopers, said Oakes remained in the river for a period of time while officers waited for him on the river banks. He reportedly left the river when it started to rain and lightning was seen in the sky.
Oakes was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and released after posting the $1,000 cash bail recommended by the St. Lawrence County District Attorneys Office. He is scheduled to appear in Massena Village Court.
The investigation into the fight outside Nadeaus is continuing.
