MALONE - Murder suspect Dale “DJ” Jarvis Jr. is scheduled to make his first appearance in Franklin County Court at 10:30 a.m. today.

Jarvis Jr. pleaded not guilty to the charge in Malone Town Court on Aug. 27. The case was sent to county court because a local court cannot prosecute a felony.

Jarvis Jr. is charged with second-degree murder and is alleged to have killed his father, Dale Jarvis Sr., in the early morning hours of Feb. 21 by striking him in the head with a blunt object.

On July 23, a state police forensic investigation unit discovered Mr. Jarvis Sr.’s body buried in a garden behind his 14 White St., Chateaugay home. Prosecutors allege that Jarvis Jr. dug out the five-and-a-half-foot shallow grave with a backhoe in the days or weeks after the killing.

District Attorney Derek Champagne said Mr. Jarvis Sr.’s personal effects, including his wallet and identification were found buried at a second dig site on the 14 White Street property buried about 11 feet down.

Prior to the discovery of the body, Mr. Jarvis Sr. had been the focus of a two-week missing persons investigation that state police officials said was opened after a witness came forward with information that he had been missing for months with no word.

Mr. Champagne had previously stated that family members said it was normal for Mr. Jarvis Sr. to disappear for weeks or months with no communication on where he was or how he was doing, and he ceased communication with his father sometime around 2008.
