CANTON — U.S. News and World Report listed St. Lawrence University among the top 251 liberal arts institutions in the country.

The university placed 56 in the online magazine’s annual rankings, which note the school’s small class sizes, selective admissions process and beautiful campus. St. Lawrence also received high marks because of improvements in academic performance and student retention, said the article.

To be included in the rankings, schools have to emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half their degrees in liberal arts fields of study. Massachusetts’s Williams College and Amherst College topped this year’s list.
