MASSENA - Massena Police Chief Timmy J. Currier said his department has received three complains in the last week and eight total in the last six months about used syringes being found in the community.

He said two syringes were found at 4:40 p.m. March 19 on Andrews Street, one was found at 1:58 p.m. March 28 on Andrews Street and one was found at 2:37 p.m. March 25 on Cornell Avenue.

Another syringe was found at 9:54 a.m. April 29 on Orchard/Pine streets, followed by the discoveries of one syringe at 9 a.m. June 3 on Church Street, one syringe at 3:53 p.m. Sept. 7 on East Orvis Street, four to five syringes at 7:14 a.m. Sept. 14 on Beach Street and several syringes at 2:14 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Massena High School area.

“I strongly urge anyone that observes a syringe should treat it as biohazard material, recognize that it could pose a health risk to anyone handling it, and to contact law enforcement immediately. Only those people trained in the proper handling and disposal of a syringe should attempt to handle it,” Mr. Currier said.

“Please call law enforcement, and if possible, stay at the location to monitor the syringe to ensure no one comes into contact with it until law enforcement responds,” he added.
