MASSENA - DeWitt G. Forbes will be the lone Republican candidate in the village trustee races this fall.
Massena Republicans nominated Mr. Forbes, 60, at their caucus last week to challenge incumbent Democrats Francis J. Carvel and Albert C. Herb Deshaies. The Massena Democrats nominated both incumbents at their caucus held earlier this month.
Acting chairman Charles B. Romigh expected another individual to run alongside Mr. Forbes on the Republican ticket, but that person backed out at the last minute. The Republicans recessed their caucus and re-scheduled it for Sept. 24 in hopes of using the extra time to recruit one additional candidate.
Mr. Romigh later found out the filing deadline for candidates at the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections is Sept. 20. He turned in Mr. Forbes name by that deadline.
When rescheduling the caucus last week, Republican officials said they thought the filing deadline was Sept. 27 and had enough time to find one more candidate. Mr. Romigh said the date mix-up was a misunderstanding.
Mr. Carvel is seeking his second four-year term, while Mr. Deshaies began serving on the board in 1995. Both men ran unopposed for village trustee in 2008.
