SUNY Potsdam weekly sports recap


POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam volleyball, golf, and soccer teams all competed this past week.


The Bears golf team placed 6th at the Elmira College Fall Invitational this past Tuesday. Senior Matt Supernault (Massena, N.Y) led Potsdam posting a low score of 87. Freshman John Hickey (Au Sable Forks, N.Y.) and sophomore Tyler Carrow (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) tied with rounds of 88. Senior Andrew Holmes (Fort Ann, N.Y.) and sophomore Austin Pivetta (Chateaugay, N.Y.) rounded out the team with a 91 and 93, respectively.


The Potsdam volleyball team (13-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) traveled to the Brockport Invitational over weekend. The Bears swept the opposition with a perfect

3-0 record during the invite. Potsdam defeated Alfred (25-9, 25-10, 25-19), Brockport (25-18, 25-17, 25-16), and Hilbert (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) in straight sets to conclude the strong showing.


The women’s soccer team (2-8, 0-3 SUNYAC) returned home for two SUNYAC games this past weekend. Oswego State earned a 3-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Friday. In the second contest, SUNY Cortland scored its lone goal in 50th minute and went on to a 1-0 victory over the Bears on Saturday afternoon.


The men’s soccer team headed south to play SUNYAC opponents Oswego State and Cortland over the weekend. Potsdam finished the weekend with two ties.

In the first game, sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute to give the Bears the 1-1 tie against the Lakers. On Saturday, Cortland scored with only eight seconds remaining in the game to end the game in a 1-1 tie.

Potsdam holds the tiebreaker against both teams heading into SUNYAC playoffs.


Sophomore Eduardo Figueroa is the Bears’ male performer of the week.

Figueroa recorded a goal and an assist over the weekend to give the Bears two ties. He also, moved up the Potsdam soccer top ten lists in points (7th) and goals (5th).

Junior Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) is the Bears’female performer of the week. Blujus tallied 10 kills, 84 assists, 10 service aces, and 31 digs in the Bears 3-0 sweep of the Brockport Invitational. Jenna held a weekend high of 35 assists and six services aces against Alfred.


The golf team returns to the course on Saturday, Oct. 6-7 for the ECAC Qualifier in Macedon, N.Y. Tee time is set for 10 a.m.

The Bears volleyball team takes their three-match winning streak into Tuesday’s home contest against St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Potsdam downed the Saints 3-1 in Canton on Sept. 11.

The men’s soccer team returns home for two contests next weekend. Potsdam takes on Oneonta on Friday at 4 p.m. and New Paltz on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The women’s soccer team is back in action Wednesday when the Bears head across town to face Clarkson University at 7 p.m.
