POTSDAM — Husband-and-wife team Thomas W. and Ellen M. Nesbitt are getting out of the candy business after owning St. Lawrence Chocolates at 4 Main St. for nearly six years.

They are seeking a new owner to take over the shop, which sells custom creams and chocolates.

“It was partly the economy, partly a desire to consolidate and get out of the business. We’ve been open for six years and really enjoyed it,” Mrs. Nesbitt said.

The cost of the initial investment to get the shop up and running in 2006 was too high for them to recoup their costs and get on firm financial footing, they said.

Mr. and Mrs. Nesbitt plan to focus on their full-time jobs at SUNY Potsdam, and neither plans to try his or her hand at a new business any time soon.

If a new owner is not found by the end of October, the store will close before Thanksgiving. Although Mrs. Nesbitt declined to give details, she said it is likely a new owner will be found soon.

“We’ve got a few people who have expressed interest,” she said.

Mrs. Nesbitt’s sister, Angela A. Ballou, makes the chocolates and manages the store. She may stay on, depending on the wishes of the new owner.

Whoever moves in will have the rights to the business, the name and all equipment in the store. They also will take over the store’s signature chocolate recipes, all of which have local names such as the orange “Sandstoners” and lemon-flavored “Golden Knights.”

“We are selling basically lock, stock and barrel,” Mrs. Nesbitt said.
