FORT COVINGTON - Aaron Sharlow scored late in the first half then midway through the second to spark the Franklin Academy varsity boys soccer team to a 2-0 NAC Central Divison win on the road over Salmon River on Thursday.
The Huskies opened up the scoring in the 35th minute as Connor Dailey controlled a punt from SRC goalie Zach Smith near the midfield stripe, worked the ball to his left and found a streaking Sharlow with a solid pass. Sharlow did the rest as he beat a pair of Salmon River defenders, almost getting tripped up as he hurdled a leg, collected himself, controlled the ball and fired a low, cross-angle shot that rolled into the far corner to Smiths right for the lone goal of the first half. 27 minutes into the secon dhalf, Sharlow found himself racing in behind the Salmon River defense thanks to an up-the-middle centering pass from Kody Mulverhilll along with an untimely bounce which kept the SRC defenders from booting the ball from the zone. Sharlow found himself one on one with Smith, taking the shot which Smith initally stopped. The ball had enough momentum to slip through the goalies hands and into the net. Smith, a freshman keeper, came up big several times with key saves, as the Huskies fired a total of 26 shots at the SRC goalie. Smith finished the game with 22 saves, including several leaping punches to turn the Huskies away. At the other end of the field, FA goalie Austin Lamay was tested, but not severly, stopping all seven shots the Shamrocks sent on goal. Not to be outdone by the SRC goalie, Lamay also made a couple of athletic stops to pick up the win between the pipes for the Huskies.
