CANTON — St. Lawrence County Finance Committee Chairman Frederick S. Morrill, D-DeKalb Junction, has asked department heads to come up cuts in non-mandated services that will in total amount to $5.2 million.

In addition, Mr. Morrill is proposing a 10 percent cut in the sales tax distributed to towns and villages for a total reduction in the proposed levy increase of $7 million. That would reduce the tax levy increase from 20 percent to 5.02 percent.

Mr. Morrill said he wanted legislators to be able to review at budget review sessions scheduled to begin Oct. 15 what cuts would mean for services and the number of employees who would be laid off.

“I’m asking for choices,” he said. “What does it look like to cut $5.2 million and then we’ll see.”
